the gentry hub . project dialogue: story behind architectural housing

LESS & MORE . a prototype of future living

project dialogue - story behind architectural housing
event organised by the gentry hub

as urbanisation takes place in an unprecedented speed worldwide, and in cambodia in particular, putting our heads around how to build our cities of tomorrow, so they are conducive for men and not abusive of nature, is an imperative. martin aerne with his team at AA&A developed a conceptual model for residential buildings in a tropical climate, that draws from qualities and wisdom found in traditional, rural housing of cambodia.

the proposal suggested a vertically stacked village in reference to James Wines + SITE’s “High Rise of Homes”, creating identity, minimising the development’s footprint and maximising the potential for natural ventilation and views.

different to the ordinary high-rise projects, the model creates an open, double-story tall inner “village square”, where neighbours meet naturally, kids play together and the elderly can sit in front of their homes and observe surrounding life unfolding.

around this core gather 7 to 12 duplex-units per story. Large, well greened, private verandas envelope and extend the minimal, air-conditioned indoor spaces. while privacy can be adjusted for all rooms based on one’s desire, the lower floor encourages interaction with neighbours whereas the upper floor offers space to retreat.

ASDC Forum Bangkok

grateful to lixil for inviting to speak at this year's ASDC forum regarding urban living of tomorrow in tune with the environment. our studio drafted and presented an abstract model to visualise our proposed response to two aspects for sensible living largely neglected from our observation; "living with less" and "extensive outdoor living" as taught so wonderfully by the vernacular architecture of the region. the model comprises 7-12 units with minimal, air-conditioned, double-story spaces for all essentials, well sheltered from sun and rain, gathering around a shared "village access square" for play and natural connections. extensive, green and private verandas complement the limited indoor space and lead to a generous living, supporting both physical and mental well-being.

interested to see and hear more, tune via the link below into the recording of the life forum. should you wish to go straight to our presentation, fast forward to 1:08:12 h|m|s via link here: https://fb.watch/iNxlYEToKn/

Phnom Penh architectural guide

  • Google Calendar ICS

by Moritz Henning/Walter Koditek

Founded in the fifteenth century, planned and rebuilt by the French, and then modernised and expanded in the era after independence, the city of Phnom Penh displays a diverse mix of styles. Here, early religious and vernacular buildings, the glittering structures of the Royal Palace, and colonial buildings of the French Protectorate (1863–1953) coexist with the gems of the ‘New Khmer Architecture’ of the 1960s. After the destructive period under the Khmer Rouge, the city went through a rebirth. It has seen rapid modernisation and economic development in recent years, and its urban landscape is transforming at a breathtaking pace.
This guide offers a comprehensive overview of Phnom Penh’s built heritage, highlighting its history and architectural layers. In addition to covering better-known masterpieces, it also takes readers through the city’s ‘everyday architecture’, revealing places off the beaten track. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and historical images, the book presents more than 140 works that illuminate the four major phases of development in the city’s ever-changing urban history. It thus makes an important contribution to current debates on heritage preservation in the booming metropolis. Interviews with local experts present their individual perspectives on the city and place the buildings in a broader context.
